Alternative to 12 Steps
Mission Statement
We are dedicated to providing the highest standard in Psychological treatment. With love, consideration, and expertise, our intention is to empower people on how to use counseling methods to effectively treat themselves  for the rest of their lives.
A Psychologically based, dual diagnosis program is rare in the Pacific Northwest. A program that targets the underlying core issues at the root of mood disorders and addictive habits is unique. At the same time, a program that incorporates laughter and fun can provide the most memorable treatment experience that you will remember for years! Welcome to treatment the way you always wanted it to be. Our program addresses the problems that get people into treatment and pays close attention to repeating problems.

When he started working in 12 Step recovery in 1994, Dr. Alpert noticed a high rate of relapse. This inspired him to continue his education and in doing so a whole new world opened to him, in which he personally healed profoundly. Today Basic Steps Mental Health teaches what Dr. Alpert learned in his schooling and from the over 7,000 clients he's worked with.

Basic Steps Mental Health is an Outpatient program, but residential like in its approach. Suddenly people can afford upscale inpatient care for the fraction of the price.

Our program teaches people to address problems: Physically, Mentally, Emotionally, and Spiritually, which provides the greatest odds for success. In treating a problem only on the physical level, the underlying Mental and Emotional issues will get out of balance, putting a strain on the rest of your system.  If you don’t know how to address the mental and emotional levels, the resulting stress can be too great and lead to relapse.

Lastly we incorporate laughter into our approach. Dr. Alpert confesses that his initial sobriety was due to his involvement in musical comedy. He maintains that fun replaced his desire to use.
Approaches Used
  1. UNCONDITIONAL POSITIVE REGARD OF PATIENTS
    PERSON CENTERED THERAPY
“when people are in psychological distress and another person really hears them, without passing any kind of judgment that they are bad or wrong, without trying to take responsibility for them, or without trying to control or mold them, they open up to the deeper levels within themselves and heal” (Dr. Carl Rogers, 1980).
  2. HELPING PEOPLE MAKE MORE RATIONAL DECISIONS
    RATIONAL EMOTIVE THERAPY = ABC's
According to Dr. Albert Ellis, when there is an A - Activating Event, a person has B - Beliefs about the event and then will enact Behaviors. The C - Consequences of these Behaviors will either be Beneficial or Detrimental. If they are Detrimental they must be D - Disputed and changed. The E - Effect is a perfectly Rational person!
  3. HELPING PEOPLE COMPLETE THEIR UNFINISHED BUSINESS
    GESTALT THERAPY
According to Dr. Fritz Perls, people get emotionally "Fixated" in time when they suffer trauma. This he referred to as having "Unfinished Business". In order to work through "unfinished business", the situation needed to be viewed from as many angles as possible, in order for a person to get the “whole” picture and grow.
  4. HELPING PEOPLE WORK WITH ASPECTS OF THEIR PERSONALITY
    NEUROLINGUISTIC PROGRAMMING NLP
Neurolinguistic Programming works with aspects of one's personality. Aspect work helps a person direct sub-personalities like, the “Inner Critic” that tends to demean and nag you internally. There are many facets to our personality and when they harmoniously work together we are emotionally healthy.
  5. ASSISTING PEOPLE CREATE AN INTERNAL BOND WITH SELF
    OBJECT RELATIONS THERAPY
Object Relations Therapy believes mental illness stems from early childhood trauma. Healing is seen as creating a loving relationship with the part inside of us that went through difficulty. This approach includes a focus on Developmental Psychology and Play Therapy.
  6. ASSISTING PEOPLE IN STAYING CENTERED IN THE HERE AND NOW
    PSYCHOSYNTHESIS
Psychosynthesis is known for its work with conflicting intentions. For example having a devil on one shoulder and an angel on the other. Dr. Assagioli believed we were created in "the image of God" and have that image within. His exercises helped center people in the "here and now" and work through the shame and guilt from the past.
  7. SUPPORTING PEOPLE IN CREATING A FUNCTIONAL PLAN OF ACTION
    REALITY THERAPY
Reality Therapy is a Behavioral approach where people create a plan of action, make a commitment to it, enact it, and then make the appropriate adjustments to it ongoing. It helps people envision a goal and make incremental steps towards it.
  8. HELPING PEOPLE ESTABLISH AN INTIMATE REALTIONSHIP WITH SELF
    SPIRITUALITY
There is a dimension to life that may not be seen, but can be felt. Adding meditation, relaxation, prayer, and avenues in which to improve your conscious contact with the God of your understanding provides the perfect blend of mind, body, emotions, and spirit. If God is love, then it follows that when love is applied to hurt - we heal.
  9. BECOMING AWARE OF DYSFUNCTIONAL FAMILY OF ORIGIN DYNAMICS
    FAMILY SYSTEMS
Dr. Murray Bowen believed that we are part of a family system. This system was transmitted down from generation to generation. A system may be "Open" which allows easy interactions with the outside world or "Closed" which does not. He believed to be healthy one must "Individuate" from their system of origin.
